The Urban Cabin Project

We’re proud to unveil #bcl’s latest renovation project, the urban cabin – conveniently located at the base of the Ambassador Bridge to Detroit and across the street from the St. Denis centre athletic centre and the University of Windsor campus. As Windsor quickly becomes one of the fastest rising real estate markets in Ontario, we recognized a need for affordable urban housing and an opportunity for development in our core. So, without further ado, here’s our finished product on California Ave.

Keeping this one simple was the hardest part, after creating a blank slate and full gut of the existing structure before renovating. New subfloors straightened her up, new windows help the natural light pour in and the fun rustic details, such as the reclaimed wooden countertop and dresser drawer vanity, pair perfectly with the woodsy vibe that remained on the treed lot. A collection of our favourite quirky art pieces found their temporary home here and the ‘cabin’ theme was completed with a haul of green goods from Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens.

The trend towards living simpler, smaller and cheaper has been a bit slow to catch on in Windsor with our collective tendency to follow the American Dream (of just the opposite) but for those who understand the many reasons we need to be moving towards sustainability, this could be a perfect new or first home. We chose cedar siding for those reasons as well – it’s long lasting and it comes from a truly renewable resource. Compared to other building materials such as steel, concrete, plastic and aluminum, wood is the most energy conserving and the only material that’s 100% reusable, recyclable, biodegradable and renewable. Other pieces such as the sink and dresser/vanity were upcycled and paired with the natural materials used for the stone shower floor as well as kijji-found subway tile and antique doors that were headed for the landfill.
