Our little Realtor and photographer team over here at Border City Living are continually searching for exceptional people with unique property renovation ideas. Recently, through our friend Anna at Neat Cleaning Co., we discovered the owner of 14th Coffee Co., Warren Rutgers. As a local real estate entrepreneur and business owner, Rutgers is definitely on our wavelength when it comes to mixing working and life with a sense of community. His swoon worthy lifestyle – a blend of real estate and coffee roasting – is lived-out on his two-acre property (complete with turn-of-the -century farmhouse and barn) in Essex, ON.
Rutgers’s lovingly restored barn is home to his office, local gift shop, a small greenhouse and wide-open, exposed-beam loft. 14th Coffee Co., his roastery and café (housed in another building on the property) was renovated using upcyled furniture and discarded, old barn boards. A specialty coffee roaster, shipped in from British Columbia, sits as a main focal point in this cozy, rustic coffee spot. And if a warm, peaceful place to enjoy a fresh cup of joe isn’t enough, the 14th Coffee Co. owner also offers his loft and farmhouse up on Airbnb and as a rentable venue for special events.
On top of all the special details, visitors will likely be greeted by a friendly feline or two during their stay. All of this is just a short ten minute drive from South Windsor, and yet when we had the chance to soak in the full overnight experience, we felt far enough away from the city to really recharge our batteries and brainstorm on the year to come. His barn comes highly recommended as a quick county getaway.
Warren Rutgers’ realized dream of a live/work set-up (inspired by romantic ideas of sustainable, off-the-grid living brainstormed during his younger years) is just the beginning. He shares our vision of Essex County as a beautiful, open space in which local residents can build the lifestyle they’ve always imagined.
