The Cheese Bar
Sarah Barette, owner of The Cheese Bar, returned to Windsor in 2014, after the better part of a decade working on-and-off luxury boats in Australia, New Zealand, Europe & the Caribbean. What began as a small pop-up at the Downtown Windsor Farmer’s Market & Walkerville Night Markets has since become a brick-and-mortar location in Lakeshore and a household name when it comes to specialty cheese and entertaining.
It’s not surprising to us that Sarah’s extensive travelling and hospitality experiences throughout the world inspired her to start her own entrepreneurial journey. It wasn’t just her time on yachts that sparked her to be a lifelong interest in food – even her odd-end jobs as a gamekeeper assistant, raising partridges and pheasants in Tasmania, contributed to her worldly knowledge and love for all things gourmet. Even though her shop has a special focus on Canadian-made food and products (like their exceptional local pies) its also stocked with imported cheese, patés, terrines and pastries.
Like many businesses, the pandemic shifted Sarah’s initial plan for her flagship location – a communal space that would host tastings and workshops. A slight pivot ended up transforming the space into a high-end bodega or grocer with wines, spirits, copper cookware, specialty knives and soaps; the entire store revolves around cooking and entertaining. For avid travellers like us, who’ve been missing a connection with the outside world, it’s been really helpful to have stores like the Cheese Bar with creative ingredients for gourmet cooking.
It seems like yesterday, that we were visiting The Cheese Bar as Sarah was manning the operation with her parents and sister. It’s fantastic to hear that they’ve now grown to a dozen staff members and are now shipping Canada-wide. They’ve also become a one-stop-shop for great local brands like Wolfhead Distillery, Sandwich Brewing Co., Sweetness Chocolates & The Iron Kettle.
